A layer of material that cannot be crossed by damp, built into a wall to prevent dampness rising up the wall, or seeping into windows or doors. Various methods can be used including two layers of slate, bitumen felt, poured bitumen and PVC.  It is recommended that ground levels are no higher than 150mm (or two brick courses) from the damp proof course to prevent water splashing up and causing penetrating damp.  If the damp proof course is breached, this can cause damp internally also.
